Lights! Camera! Magic!- How To Use Green Screen To Increase Your Photo Business Profits

by Alan Bridges

The two most talked about trends currently are that of Stephanie Meyer's "Twilight Saga", and the long-running Harry Potter books and films. Here's how, by using a green screen and some inexpensive Hollywood magic you can have your clients appear as if they are a part of these magical, mystical worlds.

To turn your client into a Twilight vampire, if they are male and are rather muscular, ask if they'd feel comfortable with their shirt off. Next, have him rub lotion or baby oil over his arms, chest and face (if the client is female, have her rub it on mostly her face and neck). Finally, sprinkle on some body glitter to finish the authentic look.

Have the client stand in front of the green screen, and have the light shine directly down on them. This should really make them shine and glitter, just as the book describes. Shoot at a few different angles and with the client posing in three or four different ways. Then, use your computer and green screen software to place them in a dark, mossy forest or a twilight scene.

As for the Harry Potter fans, have them bring any props or costumes they may have (most rabid fans own these items). Have them stand in front of the screen in their class uniform, robes, or at the very least a nice sweater and dress pants or skirt.

Pose them in a variety of ways, such as pointing the wand at the camera to cast a spell, or holding the wand and blowing as if steam was coming off the tip. Another popular pose is holding their robe open, showing off their pride for their Hogwarts house.

Place these clients against dark backgrounds, such as in front of a large staircase, in a courtyard of an old school, or on the Quiddich field (a football or soccer is a good stand-in).

To perform this magic, green screen software simply removes the green background - wherever it shows through from behind your subject - and replaces it with any image you supply. Photographs of twilight forests, old English colleges, ancient graveyards, any background you desire can easily be placed behind the subject.

Special proprietary "reality integration" in the green screen software will ensure that your subject blends well with the background - and avoid the cardboard cutout look. A few easy adjustments to color and highlights, and you have created a portrait your clients will love.
